About the church

The Church of our Lady of the Rosary in Goa is located to the adjacent of the Basilica of Bom Jesus in the west.

It is located in Holy Hill, Old Goa, Panjim and is constructed with the laterite and is coated with the lime mortar.

It has a porch which is two-storeyed and the front part has round shaped towers on either side.

There is a cross on the top of the towers.

Tiled roof of the church has the framework of the wooden beams that support it.

Church of our Lady of the Rosary in Goa has two chapels and three altars. The main altar is in the memory of our Lady of the Rosary.

The rounded part of the church gives the impression of the Gothic style of the architecture though it is in Manuline style.

Decoration inside the church

There is a memorial built of marble which commemorates marriage of Dona Catarina with Viceroy Garcia De Sa which was done by St. Francis Xavier.

The memorial is slightly protruding from the wall and is aesthetically decorated with miniature pillars and inscriptions in Portuguese.

The leaf like architectural ornamental is identical to the tombs of Gujarat.

The Church of our Lady of the Rosary in Goa also has a history behind it as this was the spot where an oath was taken by Afonso de Albuquerque while retrospecting the war between his army and those of the Bijapur Sultan the same spot where the church now stands erected.

The oath was later fulfilled as this church was made in the year 1544 and completed in 1549.
